Circa 1900, 14k, American. This charming antique quizzing glass (magnifier), or "quizzer," finds its second life "a la mode" as a charming "found object" pendant. The look is ironically stylish; a sort of Regency London meets the Brooklyn club scene chic! Excellent condition.

Noted: Chain shown is not included.

Appearing first in 1600s Rome, the quizzing glass became popular in the 1750s as a public substitute for eyeglasses, which were seen as unfashionable. They quickly became part of the social ballet and were used to express particular interest in a person or thing, as well as to show outrage or scorn for the same. Most prevalent from 1800 to 1830, their usefulness in expressing foppish delight or disdain made them popular accessories, regardless of good vision!

Remarks from Lawrence Jeffrey: "Perhaps your need is for a unique hundred-year-old fashion accessory no one else will have, or maybe you excel in the art of non-verbal communication and wish to expand your repertoire to include a chic prop! Either way, this fabulous pendant is playful, elegant, and most of all, charming."
